Novartis is ranked among the top 20 most sustainable companies with respect to reducing carbon emission between 2005 and 2012. Of 100 companies analyzed, Novartis ranked #18 across all industries, #4 in the healthcare sector and #1 in Switzerland. This new ranking, conducted by Climate Counts, a US non-profit founded to fight climate change in cooperation with the Center for Sustainable Organizations, evaluated whether greenhouse gas reductions by companies were sufficient to achieve the overall goal of limiting global warming to 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.

At its annual symposium, the Novartis Foundation announced that it will implement a new strategy aimed at helping eliminate leprosy. Based on the consensus reached by a group of leading experts earlier this year, the strategy focuses on interrupting leprosy transmission through early diagnosis and treatment, contact tracing of former patients, diagnostic tools and strict surveillance and response.

Singapore, October 31, 2012 - Novartis announced today the construction of a new state-of-the-art biotechnology production site in Singapore with an investment valued at over USD 500 million. The new facility will focus on drug substance manufacturing based on cell culture technology. It will be co-located with the pharmaceutical production site based in Tuas, Singapore. In the future, Singapore is expected to be a technological competence center for both biotechnology and pharmaceutical manufacturing at Novartis.

But today, Africa's future may depend even more on battling chronic diseases that aren't spread between people, such as cancer, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

The World Health Organization (WHO) 2011 African Regional Health Report revealed that Africa has made significant progress in the battle against many communicable diseases, including river blindness, malaria, leprosy and measles, among others.

"SMS for Life" uses SMS and web based technology to expand access to medicines in the most remote areas of the world. After Tanzania and Ghana, "SMS for Life" is being implemented in Kenya and beyond antimalarials, RDTs, bed nets, antibiotics or patient surveillance data can now also be monitored.
